Our Digital Future

School Leavers

Finishing school and ready for work? Here’s some advice to get you started with a digital career in the Tasmanian State Service.

How to start your digital career

There are different ways to start your digital career with the Tasmanian State Service.

Vocational Education and Training or Tertiary Education?

Which path you take will depend on your interests, how you like to learn, and what type of digital career you’re interested in.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) such as TasTAFE might be right for you if:

  • You like practical, hands-on training.
  • You’re looking to get started as soon as you can.
  • You’re keen to get paid work experience while you learn.

Completing a relevant VET course provides you with the foundational skills to start your digital and ICT career with the Tasmanian State Service. You can check out their range of courses online. You may be able to study on-campus, online, a combination of both or training in the workplace.

The Tasmanian State Services offers a variety of traineeships in the digital space each year and these can be found via group training organisations such as Work & Training and MEGT Australia who help facilitate the traineeships between RTOs and the employer. You can register your interest with these to receive alerts when opportunities become available.

Tertiary education such as university degree or course might be the right for you if:

  • You have a specific interest or area you’d like to study.
  • You enjoy academic studies.

The Tasmanian State Service offers a graduate program for university graduates, Graduate Development Program. The graduate program is one way to start your digital career with the Tasmanian State Service, but there are many other ways too.
