Our Digital Future

VET & Tertiary Students and Graduates

If you’ve completed, or will soon complete, a relevant Vocational, Education and Training (VET) course or tertiary studies, a digital career with the Tasmanian State Service could be right for you.

To start your career with the Tasmanian State Service consider the following tips......

What is the Skills Framework for the Information Age?

The Tasmanian State Service uses the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) to define the skills and competencies required by professionals who design, develop, implement, manage and protect the data and technology that power the digital world.

It can be used to help understand:

  • What skill you might need to learn.
  • How skills change between job roles and levels.
  • What skills can be transferred.
  • What skills might need to be upgraded.

The Tasmanian State Service uses SFIA to map skills across our digital jobs. The Australian Government also uses the SFIA. This information is used to inform the Career Pathfinder tool to help people explore digital and other career options in government.

Gain Experience

Undertake an unpaid internship to gain practical experience and help you gain:

  • confidence.
  • grow your networks and
  • develop your understanding of the ICT sector and the range of roles and employers available,
  • the employability skills required by employers.

For unpaid work it is not advisable to exceed more than 220 hours/approx 12 weeks at 3 days per week. Beyond this, unless you are gaining targeted experience, you should be employment ready.

Tasmanian State Service Digital Internships

The Tasmanian State Service offers unpaid digital internships for ICT students and graduates via education providers such as University of Tasmania, TasTAFE, and providers for the ACS Professional Year Program. The focus of the placements is to develop employability skills in a typical ICT work environment and help set you up for success when applying for paid roles.

We are currently at capacity for 2024 however we are open for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for work placements to be undertaken in 2025. Please email your TSS Digital Internship EOI (cover letter and resume) to digital@dpac.tas.gov.au clearly outlining the ICT & state service areas that you are interested in gaining experience in.

Please note - for some Tasmanian State Service Agencies registration to volunteer or work with vulnerable people including children and Police Checks are a requirement.  Therefore it is advantageous to have these organized prior to negotiating on a placement.
